You never think its going to happen to you.

Losing a child or spouse. Going through a heartbreaking divorce. Experiencing life-altering grief.

For Synthia, she never thought she would be a single mother to her three children, now ages 9,13, and 16. When their Daddy died unexpectedly two years ago, it shook her entire world, causing indescribable emotional stress and pressure.

“The thought that my children now only have one living parent saddens me,” said Synthia.
At Calm Waters Center for Children and Families, our mission is to help children and families in their grief journey caused by death, divorce or other significant loss.

And for families like Synthia’s, Calm Waters is the lifeline they need when the unthinkable happens. Synthia’s youngest son, Isaac, was in the car when Synthia got the call that the father of her children had tragically died.

Isaac, at 7, was witness to his mother's shock and pain, and the realization that their life would never be the same.

“Without Calm Waters, I don't know where we would have turned to for SUPPORT,” Synthia said.

“Calm Waters programs have allowed my daughter to grieve and connect with other teens going through similar circumstances. It also allowed my sons, Isaac and Adam, to express their grief through art, play, and group discussions.

It is so important for me to help my children honor their dad and help keep memories of him close to their hearts."

As Oklahoma City’s only dedicated grief center, we believe in providing grief services to children and families just like Synthia and her children so they can begin their grief journey and gain the tools needed to cope, process and heal without adding additional stress to their situation.

There has never been a time when families in our community need grief support more than now.

“My life is different now because I know that I’m not alone going through this process and that my children are not alone,” Synthia said. “They say it takes a village to raise a child. I’m glad Calm Waters is part of my village. Without their support, I don’t know where each of us would be.”
